Arnold Lupu Kohn was born on December 26, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was David Lupu Kohn, a Roumanian immigrant, who was a salesman at an auto parts store. His mother was Jennie R. Kohn, and his younger sister was Cecil. They lived at 6953 South Halstead Street.
In 1939 he finished high school and began to work as a salesman and clerk at his father's newly opened a bicycle repair shop. He also took evening art classes at one of Chicago's many excellent art schools.
He served in the military during WWII.
His first assignments were published around 1944.
He then proceeded to sell freelance interior story illustrations and pulp magazine covers to Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures, Mammoth Adventure, Mammoth Detective, Mammoth Mystery, and Mammoth Western, all of which were primarily published in Chicago.
In the 1950s he painted paperback book covers, as well as pin-up art for magazines and calendars. He was an early contributor to Playboy magazine.
In 1956 he married Shirlee J. Rice.
In the 1960s he worked for Whitman Publishing, the children's book division of the Western Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin.
Arnold Kohn died in Chicago at the age of sixty-two in February of 1984. © David Saunders 2009
